Alkaline steam distillation

In the distillation step of the Kjeldahl method, the pH of the digestion mixture is first raised to change the ammonium ions into ammonia. In contrast to ammonium ions, ammonia is volatile, and can thus be distilled from the rest of the mixture and be caught in an acid trap.
