ATP synthesis
To generate ATP, the phosphorylation of ADP molecules must first occur. That means that a phosphate group needs to be transferred to an ADP molecule to form ATP.
ADP + Pi + energy → ATP
Cells utilize two different mechanisms to carry out this reaction: substrate-level phosphorylation and oxidative phosphorylation.
