Biodegradation

Biodegradability refers to the capability of being broken down especially into non-toxic degradation products by the action of living things.

The degradation properties determine how the structure and physical properties of the hydrogels change. The rate of degradation should be balanced by the rate of regeneration by the cells. That means it should be fast enough to accommodate newly formed extracellular matrix and slow enough to maintain its mechanical integrity.
