Blastema

A blastema is a cell aggregation of undifferentiated cells that are able to form whole organs or body parts. Blastemas are commonly found in embryos or regenerating wounds.

Figure 1: Light microscopy image of an axolotl limb blastema. This cross section was prepared seven days after limb amputation. The blastema is coated by epidermis cells (stained in red). The dotted blue line represents the amputation plane. The area of unstructured tissue inside the blastema consists of dedifferentiating cells.
