Coefficients vs. subscripts

In chemical reaction equations, there are two types of numbers: coefficients that show the total number of molecules/atoms in a reaction, and subscripts that show the number of each element in a molecule.

So, 2 H2O means that we have two water molecules, each having two hydrogens and one oxygen. That gives a total of four hydrogens and two oxygens.
