Dilution

Dilution is the process of reducing the concentration of a solute in solution, usually by mixing it with more solvent. For example, a concentrated syrup may be diluted with water so it does not taste so sweet.

Dilution calculation

C1V1 = C2V2

where

  • c1 = concentration of stock solution (before dilution) in mol/L
  • V1 = volume of stock solution (before dilution) in L
  • c2 = concentration of new dilute solution (after dilution) in mol/L
  • V2 = volume of new dilute solution (after dilution) in L
