DNA profile

A DNA profile is the unique combination of Short Tandem Repeats (STRs) found in one individual. Every human has a unique DNA profile, similar to having unique fingerprints.

See below an example of the DNA profile of one suspect sample compared to three suspect DNA profiles. The DNA profiles evidence A (blood sample from a crime scene) and suspect 2 are a match.

The image consists of a rectangle with four lanes where each corresponds to a different DNA profile. The first lane is labeled as A and it corresponds to the evidence. The other three lanes are labeled with the numbers one, two and three and they correspond to the suspects. Each lane consists of a DNA profile which is composed by different bands. In this case, the evidence and suspect number two contain the same number of bands in the same position throughout the lane, which means their DNA profiles match.
