E-cadherin

E-cadherin is a protein found in epithelial cells that belongs to the cadherin superfamily. Cadherins are transmembrane proteins that are relevant in the formation of adherent junctions between cells, so they can bind together. Because of that, when visualizing cells under a fluorescence microscope after tagging the protein with fluorescence-labeled antibodies, it is located on the edges of the cell.

They require calcium ions to function and, therefore, they contain extracellular domains where Ca2+ binds. The regulation of cadherins plays an important role during and after development, as they maintain cell and tissue structure. They have been associated with biological processes such as the Epithelial-Mesenchymal transition (EMT).
