Empirical formulas

The empirical formula of a compound is the lowest whole-number ratio of atoms in the compound. In other words, the empirical formula only tells you the ratio between each type of element in the compound and not the actual number of atoms in each molecule.

For instance, the empirical formula for glucose is CH2O, meaning that the number of hydrogen atoms is twice the number of carbon or oxygen atoms.
