Freshwater Biome

Freshwater biome includes rivers, lakes, ponds streams etc. Freshwater biomes main characteristic is that their salinity is very low, normally below 1% in comparison to the marine biome, which can go above 36%. Freshwater biomes cover around 20% of the Earth and are very spread all over the world. Freshwater biomes are small, compared to marine biomes, since only 3% of the water on Earth is freshwater.

Freshwater biomes hold normally high biodiversity, and the species present in different freshwater biomes can be very different as well, which makes the freshwater biomes very important for the preservation of biodiversity on Earth.
