Functional classification of neurons

Neurons can be classified into three groups depending on their functions:

  1. Sensory neurons: Transmit the information from sensory organs, like the skin, joints, eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and towards the central nervous system. They are usually unipolar neurons.

  2. Interneurons: Receive, process, store and retrieve information in the central nervous system. They can transfer signals between sensory and motor neurons but can also connect to each other. They are usually multipolar neurons.

  3. Motor neurons: Carry outgoing signals towards the central nervous system's muscles, organs, and glands. There are usually multipolar neurons.
