DNA markers linked to an inherited trait can be identified using genome scanning.

The location of these markers indicates the chromosomal region where the gene responsible for the trait lies. This narrows the search down to a fraction of the genome.

The process of identifying gene markers that co-segregate with an inherited trait is called linkage analysis.
