Insulin is a peptide hormone produced by the beta cells of the pancreas and functions as a key to let glucose into cells. Insulin lowers blood glucose levels by enhancing the rate of glucose uptake and utilization by target cells.

Impaired insulin function can lead to a condition called diabetes mellitus.
