Ionic Compounds

A compound that is composed of cations, cat-ions

and anions an - i - ons and held together by electrostatic forces is called an ionic compound. An ionic compound is overall electrically neutral and typically formed between metals and non-metals.

Examples of ionic compounds are:

  • NaBr N-a B-r - sodium bromide
  • NaKN-a K - potassium bromide
  • NaCl N-a C-l - sodium chloride
  • NaF N-a F - sodium fluoride
  • KI K I - potassium iodide
  • KCl K C-l - potassium chloride

  • K2O K 2 O - potassium oxide
  • MgO M-g O - magnesium oxide
