Ionic Compounds

A compound that is composed of cations,

and anions and held together by electrostatic forces is called an ionic compound. An ionic compound is overall electrically neutral and typically formed between metals and non-metals.

Examples of ionic compounds are:

  • NaBr - sodium bromide
  • NaK - potassium bromide
  • NaCl - sodium chloride
  • NaF - sodium fluoride
  • KI - potassium iodide
  • KCl - potassium chloride
  • CaCl2 - calcium chloride
  • K2O - potassium oxide
  • MgO - magnesium oxide
