Antibody isotypes

In mammals, there are five different classes of antibodies: IgG, IgA, IgM, IgE, and IgD. They are categorized based on their structural, physiochemical and immunological properties.

The table below shows the structure and function of the five different classes of antibodies.

Table displaying five types of immunoglobulins (IgA, IgD, IgE, IgG, IgM) with three columns: Immunoglobulin, Description, and Structure. Each row contains the immunoglobulin name, a brief description of its function and distribution in the body, and a corresponding structural diagram. IgD, IgE, and IgG each have a Y-shaped structure; IgA appears as a dimer; IgM is shown as a pentamer with a central joining unit.
