Lone-pairs

A lone-pair is a pair of electrons in the valence shell of an atom which does not participate in bonding. Also called non-bonding valence electrons.

The number of lone-pairs, LP, that an atom has can be calculated with this formula:

L P equals V - B all over two

where V is the number of valence electrons that atom has in the neutral state and B is the number of bonds the atom has in the current molecule.
