Phage homologous recombination protein

The phage homologous recombination protein (λ Red system) originates from lambda(λ)-prophage. The homologous recombination protein facilitates replication and genetic exchange with its host. The lambda red system/operon includes Exo, Beta and Gam protein. These proteins are expressed from exo, bet, and gam genes. The most important protein of the three is Beta protein.

Function

  • Exo: Acts as 5’ exonuclease. Required for dsDNA recombination.

  • Beta: Protects ssDNAs (oligo) from degradation, prevents self-folding, and facilitates target sequence hybridization at the replication fork.

  • Gam: Acts as RecBCD inhibitor. Required for dsDNA recombination.
