Mode of inheritance

There are five major modes of inheritance:

• Autosomal recessive
• Autosomal dominant
• X-linked recessive
• X-linked dominant
• Y-linked

The mode of inheritance depends on whether the genetic trait is dominant or recessive, and if autosomes or the X chromosome are affected.

Analyzing pedigree charts and drawing Punnet-squares are often useful tools to visualize inheritance patterns.
