PCR thermocycler

The thermocycler (PCR machine) is a laboratory apparatus utilized to perform the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). It has a thermal block with holes where tubes holding the reaction mixtures are located. The cycler then raises and lowers the temperature of the block in discrete, pre-programmed steps.

The PCR thermocycler and a graph of temperature against time. There are two cycles shown on the graph. Cycle 1 from time 0 to time 1. Cycle 2 from time 1 to time 2. The line on the graph shows temperature increasing and decreasing during the cycles. There are DNA fragments on the graph to represent what happens to the DNA as the temperature changes.
