Pigments

Membrane-surrounded compartments are essential for many biological processes. The thylakoid membrane, for example, is where photopigments are located, within protein complexes.

Pigments can absorb different wavelengths, often contain conjugated systems and their different chemical properties determine their solubility in organic or inorganic solvents.
