Promoter

A promoter is a DNA region upstream of a gene. The promoter sequence contains DNA sequence that recruits the RNA polymerase and initatiates transcription.

There are countless promoters with a wide range of activities:

constitutive promoters promote strong gene expression, whereas inducible promoters and repressible promoters are dependent on the binding of specific regulators.
