Protein phosphorylation
One way to modify proteins post-translationally is by phosphorylation. Here, phosphate groups are transferred by kinases from ATP to the protein and covalently bound to an amino acid residue. Typically, serine, threonine, and tyrosine residues are phosphorylated in eukaryotes, and histidine in prokaryotes. This process is fundamental to signal transduction.
