Synapses

A synapse is a structure that allows signal transmission between a neuron and a target cell. The signal flows according to the action potential, so the electric impulse is received at the dendrites of the presynaptic neuron, integrated at its cell body, and the output signal is given to the postsynaptic cell at its axon terminals at a synapse.

Depending on the type of signal, there are two main types of synapses:

The majority of synapses are chemical, so communication is performed using neurotransmitters. In the electrical synapses, ions flow between cells in a direct manner.
