Taxonomic rank

Taxonomy uses descriptive rules and defining features to group different organisms. Each group has a different set of rules. The broader the rules, the broader the group. These groups can be ranked with the largest or broadest group at the top and the smallest group at the bottom. From the top to the bottom the taxonomic ranks are: life, domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species.
