Tertiary Follicle

The granulosa cells of the secondary follicle produce a fluid called follicular fluid. Once pools of follicular fluid form within the follicle, it is then known as a tertiary or vesicular follicle. Eventually the individual pools of follicular fluid merge to form a single fluid pool, called the antrum.

A tertiary follicle consists of:

  1. A primary oocyte surrounded the zona pellucida and granulosa cells

  2. Multiple layers of granulosa cells

  3. Individual pool(s) of follicular fluid or the antrum
