Yeast

Yeasts are unicellular microorganisms classified as members of the kingdom Fungi. The yeast species Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been cultivated for thousands of years for brewing and baking.

Many Saccharomyces cerevisiae are shown in an electron microscope image. At this magnification, the microorganisms are similar in shape and size to a peanut, with smaller buds attached to them.
