Next Generation Sequencing

Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) is an advanced sequencing technology where many short DNA molecules are sequenced at the same time. The technology is also called massively parallel sequencing. These short DNA sequences are then assembled by aligning their sequence to a reference sequence (reference genome), thereby revealing the complete DNA sequence of a genome. Next Generation Sequencing is a very powerful technique that can be used for many different applications, such as:

• SNP discovery

• RNA-seq

• Whole genome sequencing

• Detection of genetic aberrations (such as mutations or chromosomal rearrangements)

• Detection of DNA methylation patterns

Next generation sequencing is a great improvement on the original technique, first generation sequencing.
